The Almendra pendant light from Italian brand Flos, designed by Patricia Urquiola in 2022, is a poetic and organic light inspired by nature. Available in both linear and organic composition, its construction consists of a tubular aluminium body and CNC-machined aluminium end pieces with a matt or metallized finish. The luminaire uses Edge Lighting technology for an even and soft light and the individual light units can be rotated in 60° increments, allowing the direction of the emitted light to be changed as required. The ceiling rosette in matt white contains integrated electronics compatible with various dimming systems: 1-10V, DALI, push-dim and potentiometer. The length of the suspension cable is 3 metres. Almendra has been designed in accordance with ISCC sustainability standards and is assembled completely without the use of adhesives, allowing it to be completely disassembled and easily recycled at the end of its life cycle.

Design inspired by nature

Almendra translates to "almond", and it is this natural form that became the main inspiration for the overall shape and subtle aesthetic of lighting. Patricia Urquiola designed light to evoke the impression of organic growth, with the light modules resembling petals or seeds hanging on a branch. This natural form makes lighting not only a light source, but also an art object that enlivens the space with its poetry and visual lightness.

Environmentally friendly and easy to recycle

Flos focused on sustainability with Almendra - the light was designed according to ISCC standards and no adhesives were used in its production. As a result, the individual parts can be easily disassembled and recycled, promoting a circular economy and reducing the ecological footprint. Such an approach is increasingly rare in designer lighting, making the Almendra lighting a pioneer in eco-friendly product design.

Designed by Patricia Urquiola

Patricia Urquiola is a Spanish architect and designer who is one of the most important personalities in contemporary world design. She studied architecture in Madrid and Milan under Achille Castiglioni, worked for Vic Magistretti and Lissoni Associati, and in 2001 founded her own studio in Milan. Since 2015, she has been the creative director of Cassina and has worked with leading international companies such as Flos, Moroso, Louis Vuitton and BMW. Her work combines functionality, poetry of shapes and emotional depth. She has designed hotels, furniture, lighting and exhibitions and her work is in the collections of MoMA in New York and the Vitra Design Museum. She has received many prestigious awards including the Gold Medal of Fine Arts from the Spanish government and the Knighthood of Italy.
