The Arco lamp by Flos is an iconic floor providing direct light, designed by the famous Italian designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1962. It has a base in white Carrara marble, a telescopic stand in stainless steel with a matt finish and a swivel, height-adjustable reflector in polished aluminium with a protective lacquer finish. Thanks to its elegant arched shape, the light can be placed in a space without the need for ceiling mounting. The lamp uses LED technology with a chromaticity temperature of 2700K, a luminous flux of 1224 lm and an input power of 28 W.

Inspiration of a street lamp

The design of the Arco lighting is based on a simple but ingenious idea - the Castiglionis were inspired by a classic street lamp, which they wanted to bring indoors without having to drill into the ceiling. With a long arched arm and a heavy marble base, they were able to create a hanging light that is both mobile and freestanding. This revolutionary approach to combining functionality and aesthetics has made the Arco lighting a timeless design icon.

Marble base with practical detail

The heavy base made of white Carrara marble weighs approximately 65 kg to guarantee the stability of the entire lighting. However, the designers have also thought about practical use - there is a circular hole in the base through which a rod can be threaded to make light easier to carry. This detail demonstrates the typical playfulness and ingenuity of the Castiglioni brothers, who always placed emphasis not only on aesthetics but also on the functionality of each element.

Designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002) and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913-1968) were important Italian designers and architects who made an indelible mark on the history of modern design. Together they created dozens of iconic products that are characterized by their ingenuity, functionality and aesthetics. Their collaboration began after Achille joined the studio that Pier Giacomo ran with his older brother Livio in 1944. After Livio left in 1952, Achille and Pier Giacomo formed an inseparable team until Pier Giacomo's death in 1968. Among their most famous creations is the Arco light, which is still in production today and has become a symbol of the design intelligence of post-war Italy.
