The Overlap pendant light by the Italian brand Flos, designed by Michael Anastassiades, is a unique example of the combination of innovative technology and subtle aesthetics. The inner structure of lighting is made of steel with a white powder-coated finish and is coated with a special Cocoon resin layer that creates a soft, diffused light. The surface is then protected with a transparent spray. A distinctive design element is also the metal ring in a gold electroplated finish, which visually breaks up the volume of lighting. The ceiling rosette is made of polished Zamak alloy, also with a gold electroplated finish. The luminaire is available in two sizes and resembles a cocoon whose delicate structure evokes an atmosphere of peace and harmony.

Inspiration in the Cocoon technique

The Cocoon technology used in the Overlap lighting dates back to the 1960s and was originally developed for military use - to protect objects with a rigid but flexible cover. Flos was one of the first design manufacturers to adapt this technique for lighting. The Overlap luminaire shows how this resin can be used to create an organic shape with a softly diffused light that is both modern and timeless.

Michael Anastassiades and his philosophy

Designer Michael Anastassiades is known for his minimalism and emphasis on the balance between form and light. For the Overlap lighting, he took inspiration from traditional chandeliers and natural shapes, creating an object that does not impose itself, but attracts attention with its quiet elegance. Overlap is not just a light - it is a light object that can define the character of an entire space.

Designed by Michael Anastassiades

Michael Anastassiades is a London-based Cypriot designer who is one of the most influential figures in contemporary lighting and product design. Straddling industrial production and craftsmanship, his work combines simplicity with poetry, structure with intuition. He founded his studio in London in 1994 and has since designed a number of iconic lighting, furniture and objects that are now part of the collections of prestigious institutions such as MoMA New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Art Institute of Chicago. He draws inspiration from nature, the history of modernism, his native Cyprus and everyday life - all transformed into clean, minimalist shapes with deep meaning. Anastassiades is known for his emphasis on natural materials and their natural aging - the products of his studio are not lacquered, but allowed to develop a unique patina through time and oxidation. He believes that it is aging that gives objects their beauty and character. His work exudes a timeless elegance that never feels pretentious, but always resonates strongly with the space and the person. In the field of lighting, he has long collaborated with the Flos brand, for which he has designed a number of important luminaires - including the iconic IC Lights and Overlap collections.
